The Menaker family has donated $30,000 to The Friends in memory of Edward and Elizabeth Menaker, both of whom were active community volunteers during their long years in Waynesboro. Ed and Betty Menaker moved to Waynesboro with their two sons, Dick and Larry, in 1955. They were one of over one hundred families who transferred from Schenectady, New
York when General Electric opened its Waynesboro plant. Ed was a decorated World War II veteran in the midst of an engineering and management career at GE, and Betty was a school teacher turned homemaker. Much more space than is available here would be needed to catalog their civic activities and leadership, but long-time members of The Friends can attest to their impact on, and the respect and affection which they engendered within, the Waynesboro community. In 2000, the City recognized Ed Menaker as its Volunteer of the Year; in 2008, the Junior Woman’s Club of Waynesboro presented its Outstanding Woman award to Betty Menaker.
Of particular importance to us as Friends of the Library was Ed Menaker’s role on the Library Board of Trustees in the mid-1960’s, when he advocated for a new library and then chaired the Building Committee as it oversaw the construction of the current library. In turn, Betty Menaker was a champion of childhood reading and provided close to forty years of reading assistance as a volunteer tutor to elementary school students. In 2003, the Shenandoah Valley Reading Council awarded her its Celebrate Literacy Award.
In recognition of the Menaker contribution, the Children’s Room at the Library was named the Betty and Ed Menaker Children’s Room.
